Album sales probably. And Lana's a bigger talking point these days.

And I guess Gaga could be 2010 in the same way Katy is 2014. They kinda owned the first half of the year and then gave the second half to someone else (Katy in 2010, Ariana/Taylor in 2014)

Jive didn't release CD singles for Britney, so she had bad Hot 100 runs. Last time Jive issued a CD format for her radio hit, it stayed in the top ten for 18 weeks to Xtina's 12, 7, 4 and 8 weeks for her first 4 radio hits off her debut Anyway, Billboard flood their formulas with airlplay (see DESTINYS CHILD ranking above X and B and other hotter stars then) and the GP's view of big popstars is inconsistent with that. I mean airplay?!?!?

Britney held the world at the palm of her hands in 2000 and was a phenomenon. Christina only held raido at the palm of her hands and was another pop star with basic success.

I'm looking at it in terms of singles. While Taylor has had 2 monstrous singles so far this year, I feel like Ari had more hits scattered throughout the year to make her the overall "it girl." Taylor is on track for it girl of 2015, most likely.

Ariana had Problem, Break Free, Love Me Harder & Bang Bang. She had major collaborations, such as "Get On Your Knees" and "All My Love." She had a very popular album, and she gained attention from Big Brother fans when her obnoxious brother competed on this year's season. Not to mention she had the show Sam & Cat; she also had a huge hit in 2013, "The Way."

I agree with this. Taylor CANT be the it girl because she was 100% off the radar for over half the year. The it girl has to be the it girl for most of the year, not just 5 months. Ariana has been slaying since May

And before any swifties inevitably come at me, by these same standards Katy can't be the it girl of 2013. She could be for 2010, 2011, 2014, and 2008 though

And Ariana and Iggy are IT girls but very weak compared to previous years.

Ariana was the it girl of 2014.
Problem was a bigger hit than Fancy WW. Although Black Widow may have been a bigger hit than Break Free and LMH, Bang Bang was bigger, Break Free was still a big hit and LMH went top 10. Ariana also was more acclaimed and respected this year and had a bigger album.
