We live in a relatively new country that is often accused of having few impacts in the world. Still, various works seem to refute this claim. American literature is both influential and impactful in the world today. In the space of only a few hundred years our authors have changed the literary landscape forever.
Transcendentalists were extremely influential in world literature. They brought a sense of simplicity and nature to their works. Some authors, such as John Muir, had broader plans for their work. He used his writings to help preserve out national parks and to help Americans see the same beauty he witnessed in his everyday life. Because this was during a time when vacationing was not the same as it is today, not many people could see the transcendental beauty of the landscapes and the sky. He painted these pictures with his words, allowing Americans to close their eyes and imagine themselves in the wide-open west. Authors like Thoreau proved that being completely alone was not necessary. He observed nature through Walden Pond. He was not in a national park but was able to take in the beauty and bliss of his surroundings still. These authors seemed to reject the evolving ways of society. While the world was becoming more industrial everyday these writers took a step back to see where they came from.
Mark Twain took a different approach to nature. He created the character of Huckleberry Finn to show both the flaws and beauty of human nature. Huck had a deadbeat father that was either never around or there at all the wrong times. Because of this he got himself into trouble as much as possible. He never had anyone to teach him right from wrong. His friends were not great influences either. Still, this completely imperfect boy was able to learn a myriad of moral lessons when he met Jim and tried to help him escape. At first his views were unrealistic, trying to free him forever. Eventually he realized he could only do his best while not completely freeing his new friend. Along this journey he become a stronger, smarter, and wiser boy. He learned how to make choices and deal with his consequences. The story was greatly inspired by realism. Huck was just an ordinary boy in a terrible situation. He dealt with death and drunkenness on a daily basis. This story was published in the late 1800’s at a time when the United States was recovering from war and making great technological advances. These stories brought out the reality in life, not sugar coating anything or attributing anything to a higher power or law.
Robert Frost was a poet that was part of the movement of Modernism. His poems were short in length but incredibly complex. Every word and sentence had numerous layers that had to be peeled away to find the true meaning. He used vibrant imagery and intricate metaphors to convey his messages. He meant for his readers to make their own connections and judgments. His poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay” is a perfect example of this. On the surface it is a poem about withering wildlife. Behind the layers one can find a beautiful message of decay in our own lives. It teaches about change for better or worse. If one looks even farther they can find an empowering message of new dawns. It teaches the cycle of life. With every fall there is a way to get back up. Although he did not know it yet this poem foreshadowed what was going on in US history at the time. The poem was published during the Roaring Twenties, a time as colorful as Frost’s writing. However, if the layers were peeled away one could foresee an oncoming catastrophe, which would come six years later in the form of the Great Depression. Authors at this time seemed to see what was going on in American culture. They knew what the people were going though and what they needed to progress.
American authors have had a tremendous impact on this country. Sometimes they let their audiences step back and see the beauty in nature or find the flaws in society. Sometimes their works had layers that needed to be pondered before a true meaning could be deciphered. American literature stays strong today even as the film and music industries have seemingly overtaken popular culture. As long as the people are looking inward there will always be a desire for literature.

Except for the part where the Break Free vocals fit perfectly over the Teenage Dream instrumental? Sounds just as much alike as any of the other accusations of copying made.

They're just the same tempo, it just amused me. I was watching a Parody of Break Free and Katy popped up and started a fight over the similarities/Ariana stealing her boob projectiles. Funny. Haha.
