It's a convention guys, and as many conventions it doesn't make sense. It's just there because no one bothers tp change it to a more logical choice.

Oh, and the fact that you say December 13th 2014 is a linguistic matter. France and Italy use a different format. It seems logical to you because you probably only know of your own culture/language.
