Murder House - the house and its ghosts.
Asylum - the asylum, the serial killer, and aliens (they're all intertwined very well)
Coven - the tension within the coven, the witches battling the witch hunters, etc.
Freakshow - it isn't the freaks, or the freakshow. It's a psychopath outside of the show that interacts with the freaks occasionally.
Also, there isn't particularly an overlaying storyline throughout the entire season.
Murder House - How the Harmons are going to move out of the house and not get killed/maniupated by the ghosts
Asylum - How Lana and Kit will get out of the asylum, where they were unjustly committed (and a few other plot lines that are intertwined with it)
Coven - Who is the next supreme? And how will the Coven get back on its feet?
Freakshow - ........? How will they not get killed by Dandy or captured by Stanley?
Just something I thought of. I don't mean for it to sound all dramatic and whatnot, I'm still enjoying watching the season but I do think its my least favorite. I hope the next one can be better.

Well put.
I kind of dragged seasons 1-3 because they had a definitive question that revolved around each one and hoped that without that we would get better material but now those questions really held the whole story together.
I think if say Maggie was a true fortune teller, or they had some creepy old lady tell them that a member of the freakshow would tear the whole show apart and they would all die except one, that would give it more purpose, all the characters would be at it against each other but would still need each other to put on the show. I'm surprised they really haven't shown as many scenes of them performing on stage, they could really mess some people's acts, have it go wrong and see some of the other freaks plot against one another.
