“Shake It Off” is easily one of the best-
produced and best-sung pop songs of the
decade. Producer Max Martin, who bolstered
Ariana Grande’s “Problem” with the indelible
saxophone, does it again with sassy horns
that compliment but never overtake Taylor Swift. Martin also gives the song a beat that’s
simultaneously spacious (allowing Taylor
Swift’s harmonies and giggles to be heard
very clearly) and hard-hitting (the first
measure alone will tell you as much). Swift
here is on fire, singing verses that are catchier than their chorus counterparts and
choruses that are catchier than ever. The
bridge doubles on the spoken word one of
“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”,
and momentarily sucks some of the song’s
momentous energy, but pay attention when Taylor returns after the silence: an
unstoppable blast of harmonic energy.
Screaming at Popmatters 75 Best Songs of 2014. SIO ranked no.4 in their list.

I had to put that in there for obvious reasons. I don't want another thread ban.

It's so sad how during The RED Tour, we though Lord her voice had improved and she would've delivered with her new songs better than ever

Her best Max Martin collaboration, imho. The vocal production--all Wilson Phillips-y--is what makes it so great.

Yasss that LQ version of Style slayed me already! And yeah, the best part of Style is the "tight little skirt" adlib, but she can't recreate it live since it almost overlaps with the main lyrics, so it's up to the backing track to have that.
The take me home struggle tho

Beyonce had the surprise release (very effective), but also massive deals with iTunes and Target. Swift had Clear Channel, American Express, iTunes, Target, country fans, and Coke. Swift gave her fans incentive to buy multiple copies. They all saturated the entire market for at least a month. Cobain rolled in his grave every time.
Katy's tour was sponsored by Chase Bank. I don't know about Rihanna. Their most recent releases definitely weren't shoved down people's throats from a marketing perspective, though.

King Icunnot do you have that long ass essay about Lord selling 1.29 m first week bookmarked or saved somewhere safe I want to read it again?
Thanks
I vaguely remember something like "her label has put so much money into promoting the album have they even see any profit" something like that.

I guess some people just can't handle the truth that their fave just can't sell as much such that they have to find excuses.

"Katy's most recent release wasn't shoved down people's throats"
Gold truck sent all over the country
VMAs performance
SNL performances
Multiple other performances that I won't bother listing
Whoring out Roar to sports teams
Multiple promo singles
Radio deals
Seed packets
The list goes on
People can't accept that Lord plays the game just like all the other girls, but She gets way better returns. Sad tbh.

So I was going to post this in a thread that just closed, but this is probably a better place anyway.
On why Taylor sold so much more than Katy:
Two number one singles, three platinum (or more) singles, one gold single, over 1.5 billion YT views....I would say she's doing pretty well so far.
As for why:
(1) Taylor had the biggest Clear Channel deal in post-FCC giving a **** about payola history--not for the first single, but for the first single, the album, and the second single. Prior to that, Monte Lipman at Republic buttered up MDs and PDs at Pop radio (all conglomerates) even more so than he did for Ariana.
(2) Big Machine handed a fat check over to Eddy Kue at iTunes to take up the entire front page ad-space (can't compare it to Beyonce, because she gave iTunes the exclusive).
(3) Taylor "partnered up" with Coke (television)
(4) Taylor "partnered up" with Target (television)
(5) Taylor "partnered up" with American Express.
(6) Taylor "catered" to her stans. The whole including different polaroids in different deluxe edition physicals thing was far more "really?" than Katy or Mariah ever releasing a remix of a single with a rapper.
Simply put, a **** ton of money went into securing Taylor's sales--slightly more than Timberlake, definitely more than Beyonce, and a hell of a lot more than Katy (or Lady Gaga). I wonder if Big Machine has even seen a return yet, honestly.
Plus, she saturated the entire market. The hype was insane (and all manufactured). The album is good, but it's not a masterpiece.
Katy had a short Walmart ad the week of release and a Chase Bank commercial to promote her tour. "Roar" and "Unconditionally" had one day Clear Channel deals (Taylor had one week deals for both, in addition to every song on the album being played, as stated above).
Taylor released a better second single.
Katy's fans can blame her team or her label, but the truth of the matter is, she didn't want to saturate the market like Taylor did. She knew the success of Teenage Dream couldn't be replicated, and even more so, she didn't want people in the industry thinking her success was due to factors other than her music and popularity as a pop star. She sent a few cakes to radio stations. Literally....some cakes. That was her way of saying thanks for your loyalty. There were no extraordinary deals. She didn't take down the poor vocal performances of "Unconditionally." Meanwhile, what happened to "Blank Space" live at the Clear Channel concert? A day after it aired, it became a 30 second snippet. Her "extracted" vocal from the VMAs went away more quickly than BEYONCE links the night her album dropped.
Just like every other artist, though, something is going to happen eventually (it always does when you achieve that level of success), and sales will inevitably decline as she ages. She should enjoy it while it lasts. There's a lot of screwing over in the industry due to labels suffering, egos being more inflated than ever (artist and label), and artists' teams operating like PACs and not always taking the high road.

katy is such a saint for choosing not to oversaturate the market. I wish Taylor is half as good Ew @ Taylor shoving herself down the public's throat. katy would never
