Poor Krystal. Though "Supergirl!" served as the lead single for the Princess Diaries soundtrack, it's not even the most remembered song from the movie. (That one is coming up later on the countdown.) And despite its breezy, soulful appeal—and a spot opening for the Backstreet Boys on their Black & Blue Tour—it only took her album, Me & My Piano, to #86 on the Billboard 200. Perhaps early aughties America simply wasn't ready for two power-lesbian pop stars at the same time. Had she debuted a decade later, though, I bet Krystal and Pink could have had a rivalry for the ages.
Best bit: the syncopated "Seems like a dream" at the start of the second verse
The music video... stars Anne Hathaway in a better performance than Les Miserables. (Kevin Richardson, who discovered Krystal, also cameos as a fry cook.)
I was debating whether I should attempt this rate or not. Your write-ups(!!), these girl groups, these VIDEOS. I really wish I could have experienced this era properly, its just too good.
“How Do I Feel (The Burrito Song)" (2000) Hoku
Hot 100: —
Days on TRL: —
Overall score: 5.58 High score:9 (KillingYourCareer, Poxy) Low score:1 (BlueTimberwolf)
Single-monikered diva Hoku may not have reached Madonna status, but she gave us so much to enjoy in her short pop music career. Chief among the pleasures? This second single from her debut album, which, as Stefon might say, has everything: a staccato acoustic guitar hook; the turn of phrase "More and more, I miss you less and less"; a singing computer; and, of course, an unnecessary title parenthetical.
Best bit: "I was free when we met/You were eating a burrito/With a girl, some brunette/At El Torasco's" (I mean, what else could it be?)
The music video... celebrates Hoku's Hawaiian heritage. Not enough burritos.
I should have given it a 5 actually. I deducted points for the attrocious lyrics and the fact that she's singing like she's only now discovering that she has a larynx and wants to see how she can mess around with it.

I wish you could have, too! It really was the best. Record labels actually took young consumers seriously and there was so much money flowing that everything was awesomely over-the-top.
Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift are nice, but these kids don't know what they're missing.
I always preferred Lil Mo in Summer 2001's "super" faceoff. Krystal was such a lesbian you wondered if she had ever seen a skirt, and she never got hit in the head with a champagne bottle like Lil Mo did!

Am I the only 18 year old in this rate?
I was 3 or 4 years old when most of these songs came out, but that's what we have YouTube for. I discovered most of them when I was a teenager (and bopped on the down low )

I'm just a bit older than you and yeah I don't remember any of this.

Lil' Mo vs. Lil' Lez!
"Superwoman" was fabulous. Why didn't she ever happen?

I wish I discovered this stuff
Aww, that's so cute! This stuff is like ancient history for me/us. I have very vivid memories of a lot of these songs - like I remember when Jamie-Lynn Sigler (before she became DiPala, and before she returned to Signer) premiered Cry Baby on Z100!
BTW, I miss 2001 - when it was a rule that every third video had to have at least one shirt/bikini top and bottom with the American flag on it.
