m!ssundaztood did EXTREMELY well and spawned a couple of imitators in the mainstream world who became more open about their family-life in their lyrics, as well as trying to create "underdog" and "toughness" anthems. being authentic apparently became a thing due to
m!ss's success (not to mention bringing back a variety of rock into pop). it was a risky endeavor, what with its lyrics, the music, the producers--and not to mention the complete opposite direction she went after her debut--but it paid off.
try this didn't fare as well in sales, it still was critically acclaimed, even more so than her sophomore, because she went one step further and didn't stick to the
m!ss sound and created songs that might not have been radio-friendly. also,
try this got a grammy for its first single.
