It's just that none of the other people who released this year had even a fraction of that power. We give artists like Katy and Rihanna too much flack when they can easily outsell everything released in 2014 with multiple recent albums. They, at least, have a sizable amount of power. Because record companies were selling these records so cheaply to clubs, the riaa wouldn't include these shipments when awarding Gold and Platinum albums. However in 1994 they changed the rules and allowed shipments to record clubs to be included.

Is this the reason SoundScan never counted club sales?

I didn't include 1989 in that, lol. Obviously 1989 will totally demolish their sales.

But for everything else released in 2014, my statement is true. Katy and Rihanna have more selling power than all non-Taylor new releases in 2014.

It has an influence, but not one that can be reliably measured in quantitative terms. We can't say that out of the 230 million impressions of Blurred Lines in its peak week, there were x amount of people of whom y amount then decided to purchase the song on iTunes. Similarly, because listener requesting has so little effect on what's actually played, we can't rule out the fact that most of radio is focused on predicting the next ig hit and kind of fulfilling its own prophecy through that, or is focused on mimicking the current iTunes/Billboard charts to a reasonable extent, or is focused on reflecting the interests of paying major labels. It's not fair to count it with sales and streaming because as I see it, nothing but the total number of impressions is actually quantifiable at all - not even the number of actual people reached.

She's basically a clean slate. Her only tabloid stories have been innocent relationships. Her only complaint is that she dates too much, which is a stupid complaint for a 20-something year old.

She's found a good niche for herself.

Katy is this way as well, although with a little more edge and sexuality than Taylor. Taylor's lyrics are all very innocent, whereas Katy isn't afraid of sexual imagery and innuendo from time to time.

This is purely guesswork but I feel like the Soundscan issue has more to do with the different club retailers not reporting their sales numbers to Nielsen.
