I understand in the past with the paper magazine that they wanted the year-end issue to be out before the year-end but with the internet it's not needed anymore.

Their wack tracking period doesn't reflect the actual biggest albums/singles of the year at all

Not everyone consumes music digitally though. Yes, streaming is becoming huge now but imo, like radio the album-buying public is still a thing even though it's dying. It's just that most artists can't trigger it for whatever reason. Be it the music or the promotion.

My theory is that the industry doesn't produce many ''stars'' anymore. And that goes for all the genres (pop, r&b, hip hop, AC). Not many artists on the radio today have actual fanbases. Less stars = less sales.

But there is the trend, how the album sales peaked in the late 90s and early 00s and free-fell now, the same with singles sales now, they've peaked. I agree that there's still lots of people who still don't consume music digitally but the streaming numbers keep increasing year after year and the sales numbers keep decreasing simultaneously, the number of stars does have a factor but there weren't many big stars in the late 90s and the sales were quite OK then

If I didn't have She's So Unusual in my life then what would there be left? Sure there's personal interaction and friends, love interests, a job that's productive to society, college, service... but hell, I don't think I would want to live in a world without that album now that I've heard it.

Even though sales sucked this year, Taylor's album put everyone else to shame and proved people would still buy your stuff if you actually convinced them to do it.

It's just that none of the other people who released this year had even a fraction of that power. We give artists like Katy and Rihanna too much flack when they can easily outsell everything released in 2014 with multiple recent albums. They, at least, have a sizable amount of power. Bey as well, who would've sold even more had she actually promoted decently.

To be fair, it's kinda very dated and a bit cheesy (if we're talking SSU; her later material has its own problems). It appeals to me probably because of those factors but I can see how someone would dislike it.

It's 3x harder (in the US anyways) for anyone to sell albums now compared to 90s, including Taylor, I don't think she's an exception to that rule. It's just Taylor is astronomically huge

Same when you point out that sales now are not the same as sales back then, and people go "but ADELE could do it"

Oh I know it won't. They're entirely unrelated forms of music "consumption" for the most part (I use quotes because Airplay is not consumption and does not represent any active choice on the part of consumers, but hey, that's just my biased opinion and I should probably just move to the UK where their charts make sense to me).
