Seems like more and more songs will end up being airplay/streaming fueled as time goes on. That, or their sales will peak well before the airplay does. It is quite rare to see sales and airplay align and peak together these days.
Yes, and as the importance of sales decreases, having an airplay-fueled hit will not be as much of a detriment as it may be today.

It's definitely the second case for these two, as far as sales go they peaked in mid September.
As far as airplay, they've both nearly peaked but I think Don't still has a few weeks left.
Sales have always traditionally peaked first, followed by airplay, then by streaming. When falling, sales generally falls fastest, then airplay, then streaming. This has been the case since Billboard first started publishing the On Demand Chart, when Downloads were much better than now. I remember that because I kept wondering why "We Found Love" was still in the Hot 100 when it had fallen off the HDS chart, and was in the 30s on HRS, then I saw it in the 30s on ODS too.
This is the normal pattern for songs, (unless like "Sail" and "Let It Go" radio gives you barely any support anyway). Unfortunately when sales get too far ahead, you wind up with songs like "Counting Stars" which missed out on Number One because sales had already peaked by the time airplay and streaming caught up, so it spent almost six months in the Top 10.
Well, call it the beginning of a new era. He's the closest. I do see it more likely Animals just keeps the spot warm, but they're already closing in on the #1 spins avg. peak and Ed is the closest contender. So ultimately, I forsee an All of Me/Not a Bad Thing situation - 5 weeks, 2 weeks, respectively. NaBT is the closest it gets to horrible sales and hitting #1 I believe so the glove is fitting for repeating.
No, I'm pretty sure Bad Thing never hit #1 in airplay.

Huge update! Is it because of the Chris Brown remix
Looks like Don't will be blocked by Animals and Blank

Bad Thing went #1 on Pop if I remember correctly. People were shading it for being #1 on Pop but top30 on iTunes

I'm thinking that remix was serviced to rhythmic. Pop is probably still playing the solo version. Also, T.I. is in that remix with CB.
