"This Moment" has a great melody -- reminds me of 80's U2. The production is a little dated, but fine. The lyrics, though...no.jpg

Which is kind of disheartening because she probably wrote most of the lyrics herself, because the rest of the credited writers are the producers.

She's not a bad writer, as evidenced on too many tracks to list, but the metaphors on songs like "Firework," "This Moment," and "Double Rainbow" are too much. FWIW, Katy almost always comes up with the bulk of the lyrics...it's the others that mostly help with melodies, where she admittedly struggles sometimes. Cheesy ballads aren't her forte; quirky midtempos/uptempos are more fitting. She's great when it actually comes from the heart. The lyrics to BTGOG--including the metaphors (especially the one about swallowing sand)--are some of her best, and I'm agnostic.
As much as I hate this thread being in this section (can't stand the flame baiting), Rob whatever made an apt comparison between "Blank Space" and "Dark Horse." What's interesting is that they both can be interpreted the same way, but Katy's can have more than one interpretation.

Thanks for your insight! I agree that she is a solid writer, but in general I feel like she has lost a bit of oomph to her lyrics. Who knows though, because the deluxe tracks slay me. And this gem:
Quote:
Caught in the eye of a hurricane
Slowly waving goodbye like a pageant parade
So sick of this town pulling me down
My mother says I should come back home but
Can't find the way cause the way is gone
So if I pray am I just sending words into outer space
|
edit: Really at the end of the day, I just hope she never stops songwriting. I would love to hear her evolution. I mean, I don't ever think she'll be a gunslinger of words like Sara Bareilles, but you never know!

This is so cool to know, do you know how it is when she writes with Bonnie? Bonnie always makes it seem like she does all the work in interviews.
Also, you talked about how Bad Blood was a demo with the chorus and one verse done and that that's common for songs sent to artists that want writing credit on them, so is that not the case when it comes to Katy?

I have no idea regarding Bonnie, but I know Katy was upset about her TD interview because it wasn't all true. Sure, she's received lyric/beat demos -- do you think she wrote TIHWD and WOA on guitar, haha? The difference is that if/when she gets them, she's never happy with the lyrics, so she usually changes them all. I'd put money on the entire TIHWD chorus being Max Martin, though...it's just too him.

Radio is so boring these days without a new Katy song. I really hope there is something new for the SB.

No, of course not I'm just constantly curious about her songwriting process. I feel proud to support an artist like that; not that having a writing camp for your album is bad, I just love how much she puts into her music. Her lyrical style is broad, but I think that's just a reflection of her personality and interests... it's not 16 songs about love/boys.
I think Bonnie was just trying to hype herself up while trying to get her solo career to take off. It was a bit sh it but it seems that Katy wasn't too upset considering they wrote so much together for PRISM. Their Teenage Dream collabs > their PRISM collabs though. I wouldn't be disappointed if Katy only did a couple songs with Bonnie for her next project, I know she is capable of more.

Nialler wasted a WP on a Diplo joke about Taylor Mess.
-----
"This Moment" is soooooo over the top. It has a nice chorus but screams filler track.

All categories will be announced the morning of Dec. 5th except Album of the Year. Those nominees will be announced during a Grammys Christmas special on CBS at 9pm http://m.hitfix.com/immaculate-noise...mas-tv-special
I'm glad they're announcing most in the morning. I hated waiting all day like they did in the past. And I'm pretty sure Prism won't make it into the Album of the Year category, but I'll watch anyway just in case
