You barely see any women over 30 anymore... Let alone 40...
You have to go all the way back to Believe by Cher (1999) and by Madonna Music (2000), Don't Tell Me (2001) and Die Another Day (2002).
I agree though that in the case of Fergie and Gwen, they just didn't release good songs either.

Honestly, a lot of times it's because they are stuck trying to recreate their past success with songs that don't even sound current.
People always automatically blame age, when hardly anyone knew Adele was so young when she blew up. Most people I know definitely didn't think she was in her early 20's. She smashed because she had good music and people were willing to overlook her unconventional looks and age (although she's actually young).
When people like Gwen and Fergie try to make a comeback with a full pop sound, it has to actually be good. There are too many new popstars hogging up the airplay and grabbing people's attention for them to release subpar songs and expect to smash.
Baby Don't Lie and LA Love are both mediocre at best and don't sound like smashes at all when comparing to other music of this year. That's the problem. Not their age, but the fact that older pop stars often don't know how to keep up with trends.
