Mariah Carey vs Taylor Swift?
So we have Taylor Swift whose lyrics are always praised to heaven by the critics and then Mariah who rarely got any credit for her songwriting. But who do you think is the better songwriter?
Taylor Swift

Quote:
"All Too Well"
I walked through the door with you, the air was cold,
But something 'bout it felt like home somehow.
And I left my scarf there at your sister's house,
And you've still got it in your drawer even now.
Oh, your sweet disposition and my wide-eyed gaze.
We're singing in the car, getting lost Upstate.
Autumn leaves falling down like pieces into place,
And I can picture it after all these days.
And I know it's long gone,
And that magic's not here no more,
And I might be okay,
But I'm not fine at all.
'Cause there we are again on that little town street.
You almost ran the red 'cause you were looking over at me.
Wind in my hair, I was there, I remember it all too well.
Photo album on the counter, your cheeks were turning red.
You used to be a little kid with glasses in a twin sized bed
And your mother's telling stories about you on a tee ball team
You taught me 'bout your past, thinking your future was me.
And I know it's long gone
And there was nothing else I could do
And I forget about you long enough
To forget why I needed to...
'Cause there we are again in the middle of the night.
We're dancing around the kitchen in the refrigerator light
Down the stairs, I was there, I remember it all too well, yeah.
Well, maybe we got lost in translation, maybe I asked for too much,
But maybe this thing was a masterpiece 'til you tore it all up.
Running scared, I was there, I remember it all too well.
Hey, you call me up again just to break me like a promise.
So casually cruel in the name of being honest.
I'm a crumpled up piece of paper lying here
'Cause I remember it all, all, all... too well.
Time won't fly, it's like I'm paralyzed by it
I'd like to be my old self again, but I'm still trying to find it
After plaid shirt days and nights when you made me your own
Now you mail back my things and I walk home alone
But you keep my old scarf from that very first week
'Cause it reminds you of innocence and it smells like me
You can't get rid of it 'cause you remember it all too well, yeah
'Cause there we are again, when I loved you so
Back before you lost the one real thing you've ever known
It was rare, I was there, I remember it all too well
Wind in my hair, you were there, you remember it all
Down the stairs, you were there, you remember it all
It was rare, I was there, I remember it all too well

Or Mariah Carey

Quote:
The Roof
It wasn't raining yet
But it was definitely a little misty on
That warm November night
And my heart was pounding
My inner voice resounding
Begging me to turn away
But I just had to see your face
To feel alive
And then you casually walked in the room
And I was twisted in the web
Of my desire for you
And I was twisted
My apprehension blew away
I only wanted you
To taste my sadness
As you kissed me in the dark
Every time I feel the need
I envision you caressing me
And go back in time
To relieve the splendor of you and I
On the rooftop that rainy night
And so we finished the Moet and
Started feeling liberated
And I surrendered as you took me
In your arms
I was so caught up in the moment
I couldn't bear to let you go yet
So I threw caution to the wind
And started listening to my longing heart
And then you softly pressed your lips to mine
And feelings surfaced I'd suppressed
For such a long time
And I was lifted
And for a while I forgot
The sorrow and the pain
And melted with you as we stood
There in the rain

The Roof is spectacular in every possible sense, it's a masterpiece, I would choose The Roof over anything that Swift ever did, or will do.

mariah's songwriting is really underrated. she wrote, what, all but 1 of her #1s? but the media never seems to include that in her list of achievements.

This is such a silly thread. They are completely different to each other in every possible way and so the comparison is based on nothing but who each individual member prefers more.

And those Mariah lyrics you posted aren't even good? Is that one of her best written songs? There's no flow, no progression, no clear narrative like in the All Too Well lyrics, just a bunch of lines about being kissed and touched.

How old are you? Do you even read books? I could write All Too Well in like just an hour. Her narration is sloppy as if it was written by an average teenager. Mariah didn't rely on using exact words like 'scared' or 'cold' or cliche phrases like 'magic's not there anymore' to tell how she felt. . She was able to describe how she felt firmer using sensory details.

Taylor's lyrics are one dimensional and I'm not talking about her being unable to write about anything other than her ex-boyfriends and critics. I'm talking about her sentence structure. It's very basic. She tries to tell a story, but there's never any depth to any of them. It's always as basic as "he went there, i thought this and that, then we went here, he was beautiful, why did he leave me" etc etc. Just look at the example in your own OP.
Mariah is a lyrical genius in comparison.

Exactly.
Taylor would never be able to write like this without resorting to cliche terms like "I'm stronger, I'm a fighter etc."
Quote:
"Close My Eyes"
I was wayward child
With the weight of the world
That I held deep inside
Life was a winding road
And I learned many things
Little ones shouldn't know
[Chorus:]
But I closed my eyes
Steadied my feet on the ground
Raised my head to the sky
And though time's rolled by
Still feel like a child
As I look at the moon
Maybe I grew up
A little too soon
Funny how one can learn
To grow numb to the madness
And block it away
I left the worst unsaid
Let it all dissipate
And I try to forget
[Chorus]
Nearing the edge
Obvious I almost
Fell right over
A part of me
Will never be quite able
To feel stable
That woman-child falling inside
Was on the verge of fading
Thankfully I
Woke up in time
Guardian angel I
Sail away on an ocean
With you by my side
Orange clouds roll by
They burn into your image
And you're still alive
(You're always alive)
