At the end of Genesis, it says "Take this literally not metaphorically."
Anyways, for centuries it has been understood by most scholars as a poetic account that focuses on the who, why, and what of creation and existence and not how exactly in scientific terms it happened.
Also, scholars point to the common literal genre used at that time. Many pagan stories are filled with this form of poetic phrases. For example, Methuselah living for 900 years. We see pagan authors using this form of writing in their stories as well.
