I think that would work because once you get both versions he'll download to both games so if you sold the wii u he'd still be on the 3ds

Theres no proof for this statement, they said he's free if you had both, they also said he's a DLC from the eshop, meaning you could pay for him. So he'll be a paid dlc or free if you have both.
