Kind of true. That's what I hate about shows like X Factor where they have to sing a particular genre or whatever each weak, um no, let the artist pick what's best to showcase their skill-set... ugh. It does make more sense in a songwriting sense though, I guess. Adaptability is a skill in itself.

Start with a title. Come up with a catchy chorus that revolves around the title and the idea. Don't force it, just wait for something to come to you. Figure out the chords. Then add verses and a bridge (usually the easier part).

As for ideas, start with what emotions you're feeling. The narrative itself doesn't have to do with your life, but the emotions should be real. Or come up with a metaphor you think you can write about.

it sounds basic but actually imagine the song playing in your mind. find ways that make the song flow correctly. sometimes when i read lyrics and try to imagine it in an actual song, it sounds uncomfortable. there are some ways of wording which just don't sound good to sing and don't flow properly, or at least this is what i find for myself. sometimes it reads like a monologue or a poem rather than an actual song.

If you get an idea in your head, make sure to get it down ASAP! You don't want a good idea to slip away.

If you have an idea, but don't know where to go, that's completely fine. I'd suggest just writing something down. It might not be great, but you can fix it later - or, at the very least, it will help you get experience for later writings.

Writing often helps a lot. It doesn't even have to be all that good, like I said before, but as you write, you start noticing what you may be doing wrong, what you'd like to improve on, etc.

I also suggest joining this season's Platinum Hit! Every season, there's always at least one person who doesn't submit for a round, so as long as you do, you can get at least one free round with helpful advice from the judges (who are writers themselves - many of which who won the game before) and that can help a lot.

One last thing, I use RhymeZone for figuring out what words rhyme with what I want to use if I get stuck (but it doesn't have to rhyme! A real and genuine song can be felt without a rhyme scheme.), and oneword is a good place to start if you are absolutely stumped for ideas. A good way to use it is to just write down whatever the generated word makes you think of. You may just strike upon a brilliant idea!
