Well, The Sopranos was a one-off but it was released right around the Millenium where conusmers were waking up to a possibility of difference, of the Internet, of the whole Teen-Pop phase. There was generally a lot more acceptance of a show like The Sopranos which made it easier to build a great fanbase.
I don't agree with that statement though. I like the fact you have many shows now that are so unique, so powerful in their own little way. & what we are witnessing is a dramatic shift from shows with solely male-oriented leads to an incorporation of more Female leads and ethnic-minorities.
Like, Nicole Beharie in Sleepy Hollow and Maggie Q in Stalker (great show btw) and that woman in The Blacklist and ofc the whole of OITNB, not to forget Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder.
