This is definitely a point, but we also should remember that post-BTW is a different career place than post-ARTPOP.
The former had backlash and relative underperformance, but was still massively successful. You could forgive them for being complacent in a "this was a supposed flop yet still slayed - all we have to do is lighten up" way.
The latter was a real eye opener for them because there was minimal success to hide behind.
