The more I hear/read about her struggles before stardom and the powerful and impactful things she contributed to pop culture and society, the more in awe I am. Can anyone suggest me a good biography I can pick up? Tired of rereading the wikipedia page lol.

I pretty much agree with your choices, to be honest. Except I might like "Papa Don't Preach" more than "Material Girl", and "Borderline" more than "Open Your Heart".

Avoid the crappy, tabloid-y biographies by Taraborrelli and Morton et al. completely. They're the first books I read about Madonna and they're just sensationalist dross.

Read Christopher Ciccone's book because it does have some intimate details and gives an interesting, if biased, sketch of Madonna's character from someone who grew up with her and worked quite closely with her for a number of years. It's great for context.

Read Lucy O'Brien's Like an Icon, because it's respectful without ass-kissing. Also, she's a great writer and you should check out her book She Bop: The Definitive History of Women in Rock, Pop, and Soul which is also rather good.

Read Madonna by Daryl Easlea and Eddi Fiegel. It's a coffee-table over-sized affair, but it's also very good and gives a great account of her career in chronological, well-designed order.

On the "intellectual" side of things, if you're looking for insight into Madonna's "impact", there's Madonna As Postmodern Myth: How One Star's Self-Construction Rewrites Sex, Gender, Hollywood and the American Dream by Georges-Claude Guilbert - also very good.

The one book I haven't read but I'd like to check out is Encyclopedia Madonnica, which there's been a bit of news about recently as the author is hoping to release another one. It's supposed to be very informative.

There'll be so many Madonna books this decade. 30th anniversaries of True Blue, Like a Prayer, etc. Updates of older books and whatnot...

The people who were once Madonna's young fans are now running the culture pages and setting the cultural conversation. Now she can really coast on her status, if she wants to.
