I'm kind of fascinated by what the original direction was going to be. I've read some conflicting stuff, but there was definitely a different album originally. And she's alluded to the pressure to be a "money-making machine" that would have influenced the change in direction.

I agree mid-2012 but not mid-2013 aside from maybe adding DWUW, Dope, and Venus

I could be wrong but I remember Fashion! being one of the last songs added to the album too. It makes sense because it sounds like the disco style that was going on at that time (Get Lucky) and she quickly dropped it from the artRave since she never felt "connected to it."

Ugh. Why must she shade one of the best songs on the album?

We didn't know about Applause until, like, a few days before she announced it. We all thought it was called The Stage or something.

I meant more about the albums meaning/motifs. She went from writing about the decay of the blond in 2011/early 2012. Once the tour started and she traveled around the world, she started writing about the rise of the phoenix. Most of the album is "phoenix" material, but instead of presenting it with that concept, she made it into a vague "ARTPOP is anything you want it to be"/rave theme that came off as sort of uninspired.
