Honestly, I can't place too much blame on him. The game was meant to be a spin off but it got so massive and ambitious they made it a mainline title. Mainline titles are never cancelled and must come out.

I think he fell under pressure.

It seems to be a case of the older not being able to outpace the new. This wasn't just him. Matsuno, the original director of XII, left halfway due to making himself go crazy with trying to meet his own goals and the expectations set on him by others. Tanaka (director of XI) was forcibly removed when he created the terrible game that was the original XIV.

Nomura is so aloof too. We'll probably never hear from him what went down with XV. I just pray that Kingdom Hearts III meets his expectations. It would be a true loss to see him retire completely.

It would be horrible. I love his work and I would really be sad if he left. I would be worried about the franchise he built though. But atleast it would be a clean slate for the next person if he was to retire.

Internals at Square are shooting for a late 2015 release. Not set yet or told to the press but wait for it.
XIII demo came out in April and was released in December in japan so it is possible.

Tabata showcased four or five minutes from the demo today in a live stream. Square Enix will probably have it up by the morning. He said that the demo will be about an hour long but can be played for up to five hours and that they want to release it similarly to Type-0 HD (basically, they won't drop a release date until there are only five-eight months till release).

Finally, things seem to be looking good.

Yeah, now that the media ball is rolling I know the game is in a better condition than before.
I expect something at E3 too. The mere fact they are being more open now says the game is almost ready.

We haven't had turn based in a mainline title since X I don't see it coming back.
Even the spin off games don't use turn based. I wouldn't mind it coming back though maybe for a different project.
