"Teenage Dream" will stand the test of time. It will be played on Pop radio twenty years from now just like the singles from Daydream. Luke played it cool in selecting the instruments--it's pretty minimal: classic synths and pads that won't sound dated, real bass, real guitar, and a fat drum track. Not to mention, she sounds great, the melodies are amazing, and the lyrics brilliantly balance personal and universal--so universal that nearly everyone can relate and will be able to do so in the years to come. When you do universal, which is what Katy and Mariah do, it's tricky not to be corny, but Teenage Dream is perfect. It's truly a song for the ages.
Novelty songs are gimmicky, they're-so-good-they're-bad, guilty pleasure tracks like "Hollaback Girl" and "Barbie Girl."
