Novelty songs are gimmicky, they're-so-bad-they're-good, guilty pleasure tracks like "Hollaback Girl" and "Barbie Girl."
"I Kissed A Girl," "California Gurls," "Peacock," "Last Friday Night" and "This Is How We Do" fit the novelty track bill.
Fortunately (or unfortunately, consider the impact of a novelty song...but fortunately in the long-term), Katy clouded "This Is How We Do"'s novelty status a bit by making the MV kind of classy. And despite the lyrics in "LFN," it was still great because for the first time in the god-awful pop radio era in which electro-pop was bastardized, strong disco influences appeared...the melody, guitar, and juicy bass were so irresistible that the vacuous lyrics became an afterthought.
"Teenage Dream" will stand the test of time. It will be played on Pop radio twenty years from now just like the singles from
Daydream. Luke played it cool in selecting the instruments--it's pretty minimal: classic synths and pads that won't sound dated, real bass, real guitar, and a fat drum track. Not to mention, she sounds great, the melodies are amazing, and the lyrics brilliantly balance personal and universal--so universal that nearly everyone can relate and will be able to do so in the years to come. When you do universal, which is what Katy and Mariah do, it's tricky not to be corny, but Teenage Dream is perfect. It's truly a song for the ages.
