The direction also had a hand in the album underperforming. With Love got more airplay than Wake Up and Beat Of My Heart combined but that album sold three and a half times as much. Part of that is due to her popularity waning with her changed image and other teenyboppers coming at the time, but some were also not fond of Hilary's musical direction. It happens with every artist, look at Britney's latest album. CTS was not critically panned it had a few decent reviews, it was more of a moderate-to-negative reviewed song. We should be proud of AAY's critical praise though, it's the most she's gotten in her career and it means people are starting to take her more seriously.
Also I go to many pop forums outside of this one and AAY has pretty much been liked by everyone with few actual fans not liking it, rather than haters not liking it because it's Hilary Duff.
Not gonna comment on the Katy Perry thing anymore, we will have to agree to disagree. I listen to every album in full from every major artist so I always have an idea of what I'm talking about rather than going in simply knowing the singles.
I DO agree with you on something you mentioned earlier in the page though, she really should sing in her lower register more. It comes across sounding more natural for her rather than her higher register.
Also, one of Dignity's problems was being released so far away from the holiday season and not having a single out when the season came to sell. That's my biggest fear of this possibly/most likely being pushed back next year.

As for Dignity's musical direction, you can't satisfy everyone. I truly think that album made people start taking her seriously. I still don't think it's a fair comparison when looking at Hilary's career in 2005 and then 2007. In 2005 she had Cheaper By The Dozen 2, The Perfect Man, a huge Candie's promotional deal, Barbie, Ice Breakers, and Disney played "Wake Up" every 20 minutes. She had the tween market on lock. Come 2007, her last movie was the flop Material Girls and she had overhauled her image and sexed it up a bit. Her fan base was now in college. And again, I think the problem with Britney's latest was a SERIOUS lack of promo & the quality of the music. I really didn't see any complaints about the direction just that it had sloppy glitches in Alien, Myah Marie sounding vocals, and some generic and boring tracks. And CTS, even if a few people took mercy on it the reaction to that song was not good at all. I saw tons of fans even criticizing it. It is nice to see AAY getting love though. I just hope the video kicks the song off. Hannah Lux's color use in a Western video should be interesting.
Pop forums are generally very positive about pop music in general. The people here and on other pop forums are the target market. ONTD, YouTube, comments from news articles etc. is where you will see the mixed reactions.
I thought "Spiritual" was the best song on Katy's new album. The lyrics on the singles are always silly and I think her other songs that never get released are written better.
Hilary already has a high voice so when she sings in her higher register her music sounds very young...if that makes sense.
Yes, this album would be so much better off with those holiday sales. I'm worried about a early 2015 release.

Precisely. That's why people who loved Dignity so much, like you and I, can have differing opinions on her current songs. I love AAY and you don't really love it and that's ok. That's the beauty of us being opinionated people.
I've checked YouTube almost daily since the audio and lyric video premieres and again VERY little negative reception to AAY. It's also usually way more prone to trolling than a pop forum because there is a wider availability. There were tons of negative comments for CTS, but not AAY. ONTD has always been primarily negative towards Hilary, so taking their opinion more seriously than a pop forum doesn't necessarily make sense either.
I agree about the higher pitch. She has always and will always sound much younger than she is when she's singing in that pitch, that's why the lower one is more complimentary towards her voice.

AAY hasn't had bad reception at all, I'm just saying not everyone is feeling the sound. And I definitely don't take ONTD's opinion very seriously because they have turned on her since the walking posts got out of hand but I do believe there are people on there with fair opinions. Not all of them are haters.
I'm actually more concerned about Hilary being listed as hacked in the nude scandal now. I'm not sure how she would handle that if they leaked.

She will probably do the verses live and lip the chorus.
And Hannah Lux Davis is in Mexico right now. I need this video shot.

This, but I don't think she'll lip the chorus, I think she'll just sing along to the backing track, as a lot of artists do during the choruses nowadays.

I'm hoping she'll do the verses live and sing along to the backtrack w/the background singers in each chorus like most of you have said.
BUT we all know H won't be able to do those runs in the pre-chorus live so hopefully she'll play them off well and let the background singers just do them. I can see her doing "Hey baby baby you go me so [insert loud background singers]," while she claps her hands or something.

Since H is probably leaving Friday or Saturday (the latest) for The X Factor, I'm hoping Wednesday and Thursday are the big days. If she doesn't shoot it before heading to Australia.

As long as she doesn't lipsynch those runs... It would be SO obvious.

I wonder if she'll do the line dance during the live performances, or if that will just be for the music video

I think she'll perform live. She did say she grew confident of herself as a person and artist. Plus she's older now so it will be kinda lame/immature to lipsync on a SINGING TALENT SHOW. And her label is not HWR anymore. Did HWR made her lipsync or didnt it?
Anyways I hope she'll give her best live comeback performance in 7 years. We know she can sing live well its just that she never wanted/forced to lipsync. Also hoping she'll give an acapella/acoustic intro by singing CTS's chorus or smth.

It's not just about confidence though. Even if you can sing, some songs are so layered or vocally complex that they are very hard to pull off when in front of a live audience.
Hollywood Records never forced her to lip sync. That's a pretty crazy theory. Hilary sang live when she wanted and used a backing track accordingly.
