I meant specifically female rap doesn't sell as well as pop.
You have to admit this is inexcusable. Problem was a huge hit, Ari's the most hyped girl right now, TRL, major award show promo and so much less than ARTPOP's debut? Hm....

how is it inexcusable though? katy perry is one of the biggest popstars on the planet, and teenage dream only opened with 192k in a better sales climate (and prism didn't even cross 300k coming after an amazing era). the "biggest popstar on the planet" with "the album of the millenium" barely crossed 250k, a former disney star who has sold millions upon millions of records previously had a ton of hype and exposure and she couldn't cross 300k either
who exactly are you comparing ariana grande to? who are you expecting her to sell more than? truth is that unless you're taylor swift or eminem, you're not going to sell a ton first week; especially when you're a pop girl. this isn't 1999, pop girls don't sell 25m copies of their albums anymore.
the fact that ariana opened with more than her far more established peers (demi, selena) last era is an amazing feat. the fact that she
might cross 200k this era is also doing amazingly well.
you're acting like having a hit is supposed to sell the album when that couldn't be further from the truth. in that case, carly rae jepsen's kiss would've sold approximately 1m copies more first week than it did considering that call me maybe was the biggest hit of the year.
