ATRL is strict, but there's a balance -- more on that later. Stricter forums do exist (standard response), but ATRL is no doubt restrictive in terms of what you can or cannot say. For instance, a simple statement such as, "Lady Gaga really is very ugly" will get you warned. It's not a positive opinion, but it's not anything that should warrant a consequence.
This doesn't happen on other forums and is specific to the ATRL model.
That being said, the "restrictiveness" of ATRL is balanced out by its attentive staff and clear-cut, simple-to-follow rules. In recent years, the rules have been streamlined to leave less and less "gray area," therefore becoming more straightforward in order avoid any confusion. But where ATRL sets itself apart from other forums, is the hands-on moderating team. The staff is always available and approachable with any questions or disputes. The staff have a definite presence on ATRL, as opposed to other forums, where the staff feel virtually non-existent, not to mention unattainable. Furthermore, in my experience, depending on the forum, moderators tend to have a strange god complex, and as a result, are condescending when addressing members needs, if they even address members at all. This doesn't really happen often on ATRL among the staff. They are helpful and almost have a humour about moderating, which is refreshing to see.
So, in conclusion, yes, ATRL is strict, but the staff does a good job to counteracts the restrictiveness by being present and willing to help with any questions regarding any type of complaint, as well as to help fully explain why a member received a warning, which in turn, helps a member avoid more warnings in the future. You'd be hard-pressed to find that on other forums. Not to mention, one could be instantly banned for just "very adamantly disagreeing" or "challenging" a mod on other forums -- "Disrespect" (remember, god complex). For example, take a stroll through ATRL HQ these past few days and look at how some members rudely address the staff, almost as if they're owed something. On other forums, these type of members wouldn't even be here the next day, so be grateful for the patience the ATRL staff possess.

LeT me tell you something. I choose to give up a part of me to you guys. I share my personal beliefs and I get ram sided. It may not be what you believe, fair enough. But to call me a troll really hurts. I'm not a troll, especially when it comes to my beliefs regarding politics and racism. I am legitimately disappointed.

I think you were only claimed to being a troll because you used somebody coming into my home and making brussel sprouts as a legitimate source as to why Taylor Swift is appropriating black culture and why we can't share music and fashion. I apologise on behalf of the other member's in the thread for not accepting your opinion but really we shouldn't be focusing on somebody which evidently isn't a strong source of racism when in fact she uses POCs throughout the video - and especially since your points kept getting clocked due to Taylor doing so.
Speaking of which, can we lock the thread before the discussion gets heated to the point of WPs?

I usually enjoy agreeing with you because you have a certain hilarity about that makes you likable (at least to me), but atrl is one of the least strict forums I have ever been a member of (although I have only been a member of less than 5 forums total). NeoGAF for example is far more strict. I have seen members banned there for stepping out of line on a single post. If a moderator sees you making a fool of yourself, you will be swiftly and harshly (depending on the severity of the content) banned. There is no point system on that forum, and that is what makes it more legitimate. It is held in a higher regard because it is a PRIVILEGE to post there.

We're not that big, though. Tumblr and other sites like that have millions of dollars for maintenance so that the user experience is flawless. We just don't have the resources to compete.

Yeah I have been permabanned from MadonnaNation ( ), buzzjack and a few Gaga forums after only a few posts. MadonnaNation permabanned me after only one post. Instant perma no questions asked: goodbye. Ruthless. ATRL is one of the least strict forums I've been, too.

Thank you, Vin. It's nice to know our work is valued.
ATRL strives to foster a community built on respect, which is why we have the extensive set of rules that we do. Ultimately, that's going to change, but we are always open to your questions and concerns and suggestions for how to improve things, hence this thread.

Don't mention it, supaspaz. I'm positive the larger majority of ATRL appreciates the staff, as well.
We appreciate all of the work the staff does to keep ATRL running as smooth as possible.

Mods, can you please ban that user called Lethal? He's flooding ATRL with his hateful comments towards Taylor Swift. Can just ban him or at least order to stick to SYG?
