Well, Shake It Off managed to hit #1 on iTunes while Applause didn't, so that analogy is a bit off.

It's made it to number one on iTunes, which is something Gaga could only do with months of pre-orders assisting two of her four instant-grats, Applause not being one of them. If Shake It Off was being absolutely curbstomped by All About That Bass like Applause was by Roar and Blurred Lines, then the comparison might make sense.
