People don't like buying music because it has been devalued to a simple free download. At least if people stream, some sort of money could be made, even as minuscule as it is.

So in 2013, when the average blended payout for audio and video streams was approximately $0.00375, or nearly four-tenths of a penny, 2,000 streams comprised one SEA unit. But this year, the average blended per-stream rate for audio and music videos is about $0.005, or one half a cent per stream so 1,500 streams equal one album unit this year.
I think some of you are severly underestimating this drastic decline in sales. It may be caused by music the public doesn't really LOVE being shoved down their throats via radio, but it still happened.
The fact that some people expect Taylor to still debut with 600,000+ is just Things aren't nearly as good as they were in 2012

I still think 600k is out of range, but she has a very loyal fanbase out of all of the pop girls (and guys) that is dedicated to buying. Sweeter Than Fiction, a soundtrack to a flop movie, debuted in the top ten (on HDS), and it wasn't even really promoted, selling around 120k that week.
The digital download will be a thing of the past (much like the physical single) in the next 10 years. Sales will continue to decrease as music becomes more accessible. Why purchase it off iTunes when you can stream it off your mobile device for free? In my opinion, sales would be higher if people still had to actually go out and buy albums.

If someone can use Spotify for absolutely free, how is that profit-maximizing?

I know she has a dedicated fanbase which could easily help her dominate the later half of 2014 similar to how Ariana is dominating now. Despite her actual numbers not being that impressive if compared to previous years (besides Problem), because the sales are so ****, her fanbase is making her have hit after hit.
