I think that the reason European/Australasian hits don't gain traction in the US is because they have no credibility. Usually most Americans (even pop music followers like me) have never heard of these European acts. Example: before Rather Be came along, I had never heard of Clean Bandit.

I never heard of Clean Bandit before Rather Be and I'm European. Rather Be was a huge hit because of the song itself, so yeah the fact they're british is no factor.
