Gaga's hits post-2010 have surprised me. Born This Way was huge, I know the hype coming off TF and TFM garnered most of the song's success but I was still surprised (mostly because I think it's one of her weakest singles) but especially for a song being about LGBT equality for radios and the GP to support it. Other "equality, love yourself" smash songs are so very general, safe and pop-ish. BTW was a lot more riskier, and gay marriage support has come a long way since start of 2011. And people wouldn't have bought it if they didn't like it.
Then we had TEOG which was a nice change for Gaga, it's slow build, saxophone beat (which is everywhere now may I add) alongside it's 80s throwback gave us a complete surprise when the GP latched onto it as a promo single and paid the typical Gaga sounding RedOne produced Judas dust, which I, like many, thought it was a sure-fire smash when it dropped.
I remember when You & I was announced everyone proclaimed it would flop, yet managed a top 10 peak going 2x platinum and is a Gaga favourite for talent show covers. And of course, we all thought MTN would be a hit but we know how that turned out.
Then with Applause, everyone wrote it off the first week because it was a weak lead, the verse lyrics were too weird and off putting for the GP, yet it secured 14 weeks inside top 10 and is nearing 3x platinum. Yet, G.U.Y., something many deemed as the safest track on ARTPOP, flopped to the high heavens.
This is a super long post y'all probably won't read I know, but I just think it's extremely hard to judge what the GP what from Gaga when her four biggest hits post-2010 have been surprising and risky in some sense or another and her weakest performance singles are all tracks we thought were safe and sure fire smashes before they were officially released.
Even going back prior to BTW, who would've thought any of her singles would've smashed? Telephone was the only sure-fire smash, but Bad Romance was extremely risky and easily could've flopped, but the GP latched onto it from the start. Same goes for Paparazzi, which remains one of her biggest radio hits to this day.
There really is no knowing what kind of Gaga the GP is going to go for.

Well ****, I never really thought of this, but you're completely right.

This too. Especially Paparazzi. It's one of the most...different songs. And I love it for that.
I actually learned something interesting last night, I took my friend who is an art major to the show with me and apparently the polka dot outfit is made to reference an artist named yayoi kasuma's work. I don't know if it was intentional by the designer or not, but I thought it was cool that it reminded my friend of that artist's work.
Bad Romance had too much going for it to flop, similarly to Born This Way. I guess Paparazzi actually could have flopped since LoveGame wasn't too strong (despite it's iconic Disco Stick line) but I think they promoted it so well that it couldn't have done badly.
Aside from BR, Paparazzi's peak is one of the more embarrassing and biggest scandals of her career. Realistically, it should have been 1 but the peaks just didn't match up.

She ruined the studio version of Sexxx Dreams. iTunes festival kinda destroyed the whole album experience for us because of two reasons:
1) We lost excitement once we knew exactly how certain songs went.
2) We preferred most of the demos over what was released.
Also, I think the tracklist itself looks bad. So many pointless symbols and misspelled words. One of the best things about waiting for an album is discovering song titles and thinking of what they're going to sound like and being completely blown away and shocked when they don't sound like anything you expected them to.
Also, releasing ARTPOP after BTW seemed like such a step down because BTW was so wild and original, while ARTPOP, even though it was still original, was so controlled. Some of the best songs on ARTPOP are comparable to some of the worst on BTW. The era leading up to ARTPOP inbetween post-BTW kinda led us off to a wrong start. We are expecting stuff like Stache and getting crap like Manicure and Dope.
Mixed messages along with an underperforming lead single and dwindling support led us to where we are, but in no way do I think that she will never be able to top herself again and it could be the album after ARTPOP.
I still can't believe how quickly people were trying to dismiss her as if she didn't eclipse everyone in the industry.
I was looking on Gagapedia, and performance-wise, she literally only promoted ARTPOP in the US, the UK, Japan, and Germany (and only once there, in Berlin). I mean, I'm thankful she actually goes out and promotes, and she did snag a few good spots this era (VMA's, AMA'S, SNL, The Voice, X-Factor UK, etc.) but it was really sparse compared to, say, Born This Way, and she missed a lot of places. (France, Australia, Canada, etc.). The only single I would say had sufficient promotion during its era was Do What U Want, and even then, I would only say that in respect to its US and UK promotion. I always ignored people who said the problem with ARTPOP was a lack of promotion, because it really did receive much more than many other recent eras by other artists, but perhaps that actually was a problem with the era. I mean, only three performances of Applause during its single era? Only one televised performance of G.U.Y.? A complete absence of performances in any country other than the four biggest in the world? (At least they hit those four though.)
They play Venus, Applause, Do What U Want, Donatella and Aura all the time in the club but I never heard G.U.Y. it's her most bop-worthy song and I never danced to it
I'm so excited for Gaga's next album. With the mess that was the ARTPOP era, I'm excited to see how the whole situation has inspired her and what direction she'll take.
