WOO when I refreshed, I didn't expect this essay.
Anyway, you're doing too much. He doesn't really date black women, he feels uncomfortable around black people because he feels he isn't black enough to fit in, but those are all personal things. Reducing his experience to "a few people kids teasing him" is terribly unfair. Bullying can and frequently does run far deeper than simple teasing. Bullying comes on different levels, and it can completely change how someone views themselves and views life. Clearly the bullying Devin received affected him deeply, and you nor I have any right to belittle that into something meaningless. He doesn't trash black people, he doesn't act like he's better than them, he doesn't do any of that. He even talked about how much he admires Jocasta in the house.
Attacking someone who has issues with their racial identity, a sad byproduct of our racist society, is something I will never understand. You would never attack a gay kid who hated himself because of the homophobic bullying he received in school. The lack of sympathy is mind-boggling to me to be honest.
