A bit over the top.
When the Sims 3 was released, there was a lot of hate. People loved the open world, but complained that The game wasn't as good as The Sims 2.
They started developing this game literally after The Sims 3 was released. So they took on the opinions of what people wanted back then.
Of course as The Sims 3 went on, people began to love it etc. But the Sims 4 had already begun development. And then of course, half way through Maxis joined, EA wanted it Online etc. and it became a mis-mash of idea's.
So The Sims 4 is more like The Sims 2, than The Sims 3. And yes, there is open world. They are just smaller and there are more of them. They haven't ruined everything, they are just bringing The Sims back to its roots. Which in 2010 would have worked, but people have no got used to The Sims 3 that it now feels like regression rather than progression if it had been released when people didn't like The Sims 3.

even the hate on the sims 3 pre release could never be compared to the hate sims 4 had right now,, it's more on tantrum/rage than hate lol
