Nobody's being pretentious or masking their true musical tastes. People have been bringing up songs that may have not done well commercially or aren't really considered to be "pop" because the criteria for the countdown is very unrestricted and open-minded. Suggestions and FYCs made that have done poorly on the charts are most likely critically acclaimed or well liked by fans of music that goes beyond just the mainstream.
