All she has to do is release good, consistent videos. Artpop film was a step in the right direction but she needs to drop credits from now on.

Can we talk about how DWUW outsold Unconditionally and Birthday by a landslide, with no video and about the same promotion, yet people put it in the same category with them?

I really think DWUW had the potential to be #1 if they had gone ahead and released that video. Radio would've picked it up at a faster pace instead of letting it stall, sales would've risen, the video controversy would've given massive streaming points.

To be honest, there was really no lead single material on the album, or really anything that could have performed better than "Applause." She didn't really have a whole lot of options, despite her saying that all the songs on the album were hits waiting to happen. As grating as I found "Applause" when it was first released (it was an acquired taste, which lead singles can't afford to be, imo - they need to instantly grab your attention), it really was the best (and only) option they had for a lead single. As much as she apparently wanted "Aura" (which that revelation alone just... We really dodged a bullet there), that song would not have done her any favors.

Also... As much as her fans like to tell themselves Venus would have been a massive hit, it really would have been a disastrous flop for her. (Again, we dodged a bullet here - Troy knew what he was doing)

I think Aura would have done a lot better than Applause. It's not as dated or noisy.

I agree with you about the chorus (it's one of her best, I think!). I just think it's a little too bogged down by her vocals during the verses. A lot of what she's saying is not really discernible.

Applause isn't dated, it's bang on trend. It's a decent lead single and people liked it.

Agreed on both points. Gaga has essentially become unmanageable. It's really going to be interesting to see if she can get her career back on path, because as much as she'd like to believe it, she can't do whatever the hell she wants. She needs some major, major direction.

The biggest irony throughout this all is that Troy made some great decisions in managing Gaga and the album this era. He must have done something really nasty to have hurt her so badly aside from anything musically.
