Although there are some cases. I remember a frontman (not sure if it was Steven Tyler or Mick Jagger) once saying they were influenced by Aretha Franklin. Grimes has called Mariah one of her biggest influences, and their music couldn't be anymore different. You don't have to have a copycat sound to be influenced by someone. Christina has talked about being influenced by Madonna, but their catalogs don't mirror each other.

But in terms of influence I would say Billie Holiday is the most influential woman in modern music.

My mum used to play her all the time when I was growing up, she is incredible, breathtaking. I have always loved her and I read an article that explained how she redefined vocals for the 21st century and invented new ways of phrasing.
