The sinlge era has been such a mess if you think about it.
So Aura was supposed to be the first single, Interscope said no. Then they discussed about Sexxx Dreams being the first single, Interscope said no. They chose Applause. She leaks Aura to get hype and prove Interscope "wrong".
An album facebook header is uploaded saying "with Applause & Gypsy". Everoyne freaking out thinking Gypsy is the second single. The header gets deleted.
She hosts a q+a on twitter asking fans what they think the next single is. She announces Venus as the 2nd single.
Interscope releases DWUW as a promo single. Shoots to No. 1 thanks to album pre-orders. They change the 2nd single to DWUW.
Gaga shoots a quick DWUW video. Gaga gets depressed, doesn't release it and hides at lm.com.
Announces spring awakening.
Releases G.U.Y. without much promo and radio deal and goes on tour.
So we went from Aura < Sexxx Dreams < Applause < Gypsy < Venus < DWUW < G.U.Y.
The End.
Venus was supposed to be the first single at some point as DJWS said the first single was produced by a girl in like June 2013.
Alejandro has her best verses off the top of my head. They're so good, better than the chorus.
Oh yeah, I forgot to include it; along with Paparazzi's verses. I always love when she experiments with her vocals in her verses, like in BR, Judas and MJH.
Edit: Are you sure that's her? cause some of the tweets
Yeah, it's her, you can see the link where she must have uploaded aura, then she was telling everyone who called it burqa that they were getting the name wrong
has she been on it today, i swear there were more tweets she tweeted someone saying the white roses thing was real

Venus didn't exist in June 2013 and I doubt that DJWS said those exact words. The first single/s was/were going to be Aura, Gypsy and/or Applause. Then they considered having a 2nd single just after Swinefest that was between Aura, Sexxx Dreams and MANiCURE, but nothing came out of that, they decided to wait for Gaga and her time to finish the tracklist and then decide, and the song they picked was Venus.
DJWS only alluded that the first single might have not been produced by a man. But I think they were really not sure what the single was at that time, and I am almost sure they did pick Venus at one point to be lead but they decided to go against it. The problem with this album was that they truly had tons of songs that could have been leads but I think because they were so focused on trying to have the "best comeback" that they fumbled after applause. Applause did well in the U.S but it didn't exactly have the desired effect they wanted WW. So they probably didn't want to risk it and chose DWUW instead because of the positive critical reviews they received.
I'm actually going to take Gaga's word this time and believe that she truly didn't have that much time to prepare a music video for Applause.
