I stan for artists that write all their own material (Justin, Coldplay, Lana) and ones that do not (Britney, Jennifer, Hilary - these three have written some of their material, but not near as much as the first three mentioned).

I don't really care. It's great if they do/can, it makes the music feel much more personal, but it's definitely not "overrated".

Songwriting is absolutely a talent. Writing good songs, that is. If all you listen to is music with awful lyrics (and songwriting isn't just the lyrics, FYI), then of course you'd think it's not that big of a deal. But songwriting IS the song. And writing your own songs is absolutely a huge talent that not many possess. If you're going to discuss who is the greatest artist, then songwriting absolutely comes into play, if a singer writes their own material then it means they are a complete artist who is expressing something from within and is able to articulate their ideas into a work of art.

That said, there are plenty of songwriters who would not make good singers, and plenty of good singers who can't write for ****, so pairing them up is absolutely acceptable and has created plenty of amazing art.
