Just because Bjork isn't popular doesn't mean she's forgettable, she's the polar opposite. SYG love to drag her for some reason but she stays acclaimed and frequently mentioned as an inspiration
Before BTW came out, people were glad 'ReDone' was getting ditched, and before Artpop came out people were glad 'Fernando Gari-gay' and his overproduced noise was getting ditched. And now they're gone they are suddenly the best thing thats ever happened to her
Also, let's not pretend Jay can hold his own these days w/o Bey, Kanye, and JT dueting with him. A Madonna + Macklemore + PSY + Miley mess only with artists that are better than him!
The highest selling rap album of the year so far has not even outsold MCHG's first week yet. He can hold his own.
Getting Mariah with Heartbreaker, Beyonce with Crazy In Love, Rihanna with Umbrella, and Alicia with Empire.
He always has do something out of the ordinary or run to someone else's power to stay relevant these days.
If he didn't marry Beyonce I definitely think Kanye would current be bigger. Even Kanye + Kim is starting to overshadow Bey + Jay.
Kanye's album went Gold with no actual hits though. Jay-Z had successful singles, including a Top 5 hit. Jay-Z is never touching Kanye's work either, everyone knows Kanye's discography > Jay's discography.
I'm not arguing that. You can say that he has the worst discography ever and I wouldn't care but as a recording artist he is bigger than Kanye and his album moved million + copies despite a million already being basically given away. Also most of the rappers need pop collabs for a crossover smash otherwise it's pretty tough to go number 1.
I think if Jay and Kanye both dropped albums like BEYONCE out of surprise, Kanye would sell more.
His work is always more liked, Jay-Z wouldn't have a dumbass tactic to get ahead, and we've seen Kanye end 50 Cent who had a bigger peak than both releasing the same week.
I don't hate Jay-Z. I respect him and I like him and Bey but they've become SO obnoxious over the past year or so. Like, y'all are married. We get it. Everything you do doesn't have to involve the other. I don't want to have to hear a Jay verse every time I listen to Beyonce. It's almost like they don't have individual identities anymore. They're turning into like a duet group or something. It's excessive. They're not Sonny&Cher or Ike&Tina. They're Beyonce Knowles & Jay-Z. They're both stars in their own right.
