I actually think the MK creators just added that for special affects or something, you don't really have to go too far into it .

I guess it could be the costumes though

Did they ever explain how Cage and Liu Kang got their powers? The former especially?

With Kitana, Jade, etc, you could at least put it down to the fact that they're from another realm where magic is commonplace.
