The hook ALONE inspired pop songs after it, and its become a standard in pop music.
Call me when a whole arena literally screams your entire song like this:
Also look at this. Internet was not even that big in 2007.
And y'all using sales as argument?
Umbrella's debut week was the biggest at that time, and we all know 2011 was the peak of digital sales so obviously Firework sold more. If Umbrella was released in 2011, it would've sold loads more than Firework and probably the same as Poker Face, JD, CMM..
Y'all Kats stay calm with those ****** lyrics "do you ever feel like a plastic bag"
Dead @ yo graph literally proves that Firework is bigger NOW, the question is NOW, not IN THEIR PEAK

I don't see the o.p specifically mentioning now, what's more by this logic fancy is the biggest song of all time just because it's bigger than all songs now.
So why didn't Umbrella sell more if it had more impact
Because digital sales weren't that ****ing big in 2007 yet it still managed to sell 4+million copies. And if we talk about sales, Umbrella's opening week was the biggest for it's time. Were any of Firework's weeks the biggest ever?
This is the stupidest conversation I've read in my entire life hahahaha. Just take step back and look at what you're arguing, so passionately, over. Both songs were huge. I don't think you'll be able to find many people on this earth who know Firework but not Umbrella, or Umbrella but not Firework, unless they're a kid who's too young to remember 2007. Most people would know both songs or neither. Especially young people in their teens/20s. Find me someone young who knows one but not the other. They're both two of the biggest pop songs of our generation. They both won the VMA for Video of the Year. Whether or not you personally believe one is a tiny bit more 'impactful' than the other, it won't magically invalidate the fact that the other was still an insanely impactful song that helped define our generation.

Because it was released in a year that didn't have as big singles sales as firework
What's so difficult to understand really? At this point you're arguing just for the sake of arguing

But it didn't even sell that much compared to other songs that year. Wasn't Girlfriend the best selling song of 2007? Didn't already forgotten Irreplaceable top it on BB Year-End chart?
Stop overestimating Umbrella like it was one-of-a-kind, while the truth is it only lasted for several months, faded fast, topped UK chart for 10 weeks mostly due to extremely poor sales that time, and got overshadowed by songs like Say It Right, Girlfriend and Irreplaceable.

But those songs don't have impact. Altho big, they did nothing for their artists. Kinda like Call Me Maybe. Nelly and Avril are dead, and the last one is using video albums and surprise releases to stay relevant.
And I'm not saying Umbrella is one-of-a-kind, it's just bigger than Firework or whatever.

But Katy is currently the biggest star in the world, can we say Firework did wonders to her?

1. Irreplaceable was released in 2006 and charted in both 2006 and 2007 it came before umbrella hence can't overshadow it.
2. Girlfriend sold more than umbrella in 2007 yes but how is that even relevant to this? Firework wasn't the best selling song of 2010 and 2011 either.
3. I don't even know what a say it right is so I won't even go there
4. The only overestimating done here is by those like you claiming firework is/was bigger than umbrella ever was and that umbrella is overestimated.
