I don't think it's too much of a reach.
Her looks between albums tend to tease where she's going - she looked 'darker' between TF and TFM, she went 'rockier' between TFM and BTW, she brightened things up between BTW and AP, and now she appears to be going disco glam.
In addition to that, the last additions to AP (from what we know IIRC) were Venus, Fashion! and Sexxx Dreams' new bridge, all of which have disco leaning elements. Whilst not conclusive, I feel it shows where her head was going when we last heard new music from her. Previous albums have had foreshadowing teasers (PF to TFM, DITD to BTW, HML to AP).
Then, in terms of looks, you have the likes of the Christina DWUW disco performance and now this. Could maybe argue her Porter Mag shoot was showing her 70s leaning, too.

I was actually thinking about her trying to bring back perms the other day. If she can do that, she's a fashion icon.
I agree that the concept is cool...she just needs to polish it. This is a bit too dated in shape/form. She should probably opt for more looser curls so the overall effect is less joke-shop wig and more wearable style.
Keep the shad subtle or don't shade at all, I suppose.
