Can't really say for sure. TS1 and 2 are such dramatic differences compared to TS3. Rod Humble took over for Maxis right before TS3 and his previous job was working on mmos. He wanted to cash in on two markets by making The Sims 3 more objective and opportunity and collecting focused instead of on interaction and storytelling. TS2 was more of the latter. Presumably, with Humble gone and EA ditching the always online ****, they seem to be doing anything they can to appease fans.

What a total mess just remembering the past 5 years

World Adventures was such a kick in the balls for so many fans. We are not here for some objective type **** that isn't really optional. It felt like we were being told how to play too much. Sims 2 really felt like you could do anything you wanted and there was never emphasis on one area over another.
I'm such a Sims 2 stan it's probably why, I don't even mean to talk badly about Sims 3 cos I still play it occasionally.

I honestly think it's a better style, I personally don't want my sims to be realistic
