You need to listen to it, it's a pretty solid album and I still use every track on it - something I can't say about "Blown Away".
I think the problem a lot of fans have is that it's generic sounding because I think Carrie really wanted to try to get close to pop success that era, without actually labeling the songs pop songs. "Cowboy Casanova" and "Undo It" have really dumb downed lyrics with basic production but Carrie sounded so confident on these sassy tracks that I looked pass it all.
The album also has "Quitter" which I know many Carrie fans on the OFC despised because it was produced by Max Martin, but it's still to this date one of her best up tempos she's ever recorded and could've really done magic for her career.
Play On also contains some of her best ballads she's ever recorded. "Someday When I Stop Loving You" and "What Can I Say" are pure gold. Except for "Wine After Whiskey", there isn't another ballad in her discography that really compares to the two.
Also there's gems like "Play On", "Songs Like This" and "Unapologize which are really worth checking out!
Another reason I think that a lot of fans don't like the album is because of how in-cohesive it is. It's part emotional love ballads, part Christian yee-haw music, part sassy rebellion that none of it really blends together well. I think if they wouldn't have put "Mama's Song", "Temporary Home", "Change" and "Play On" and added "Oklahoma Wind", "Sugar Rush", "Lie to Me Again" and "Wine After Whiskey" the album would have been nearly perfection.
