It was really easy! But I think it may just be luck. I had a really massive artist (I made my own label using the editor, and stole a few random artists; Young Money being one of them), and increased their promotional budget to Above Average Marketing, which resulted in them selling a lot more. Even flop artists with ~10% popularity can make the top 10/20 if you give them a high enough budget. The trick is waiting until their morale is high before you record an album, and maintaining media appearances after you release an album/single. I used to think that the media had nothing to do with success, but that's false. A single can shoot to the top 5 with a few major media appearances within the week, but it only seems to effect America and Canada; the others peak within their first week it seems. Quality is an important factor, too. If an album has a very low MWScore (critical reception), it's probably going to flop. The higher the score, the better it will sell on its own. But again, this is just a matter of luck. I've messed around with using different producers, and it doesn't seem to make much of a difference in the end.
You're probably going to lose a lot of money on newer artists at first, but that's okay. DVDs and live albums can be good money makers, but they're risky. If you invest a lot in their promotion, it'll pay off. And release a ton of singles, too. It increases their popularity, which helps an album sell better in the end.
