11 - For A Pessimist, I’m Pretty Optimistic - 369.5

Well, there goes our last album track.

Coming in at #11 is For A Pessimist, I'm Pretty Optimistic. This song has a place in my heart due to it being the first Paramore track I knew - I brought Riot! on something of an impulse, and I hadn't even Misery Business at the time, but I brought the album purely because I liked the name. This being the first song on the album, it was the first I heard, and I immediately loved it. I loved the dynamic guitars in the verses, the bridge was holy and the chorus was incredible. To be honest, this is one of their few songs which the chorus is the weakest part, along with gems such as Misguided Ghosts, Last Hope and Pressure. This song was, for a long time, my favourite off of Riot!, and was only overtaken by Fences earlier this year. Overall, whilst I am happy this song was the last album track remaining, I find it almost frustrating that it is #11 because it deserves to be Top 10 over at least 2 and possibly 3 of the songs in there.

10 - The Only Exception - 371.5

This is a hard song to describe - imagine Maps-era Yeah Yeah Yeahs covering a Parachutes-era Coldplay song and this is probably the closest thing to it.

To be honest, I never really got why this song was so loved over Misguided Ghosts when they are actually rather similar - slow songs built around a simple acoustic guitar. Yes, this song is far catchier, but it's gargantuan hooks come at the sacrifice of the bands unique attributes in a way. Don't get me wrong, I love the song and even have it a 10, but it just doesn't sound like Paramore - it sounds like an acoustic demo off of a Hayley Williams solo album. Whilst this song is the most mellow off of Brand New Eyes, it also appeared to be the most fractured - Hayley's vocals remain as strong as ever throughout, particularly towards the end, and the two sections of the song seem quite the juxtaposition. I also can't come up with any memorable lyrics, with the closest being 'I'd never sing of love if it does not exist'. I guess that whilst I find the individual parts of the song weak, they all come together to create a celebratory atmosphere, which is the songs saving grace - if the song was only as good as the sum of its parts, I would have only given it a 7.
