People call Katy generic because her music appeals to the lowest common denominator. While some people look on it as a bad thing but it assures audiences of all ages can relate to her music which assures her sustained success. It's inoffensive and fun and the songs have low burnout rates so you can hear them on the radio years after and still enjoy them. Also, the different slants on pop that Katy uses - urban-based like ET and Dark Horse; mid-tempos like Wide Awake and TOTGA; as well as the purer radio-pop like California Gurls and Roar - ensures that the songs don't sound exactly alike, allowing song after song to be a radio hit, yet all the songs are still undeniably Katy.

So yes, Katy's music can be seen as generic but she's still winning by doing so

She'll fade once her generic stuff runs it's course. We have already witnessed "Unconditional" do absolutely nothing & she remains Grammy-less. Looking back at generic artists, they come quick then fall hard. Katy is no different.
