The Edge of Glory is euphoric! The production is heavenly, as is the way Gaga sings, and the lyrics are moving. Everything works together here. That's the problem with Applause. DJWS and Gaga produced something good, but the lyrics and vocals go against the uplifting sound of the song - except the chorus!

I know that these were Hitchcock references though. I'm just saying she is known for "weird" lyrics and not just basic lyrics.

After all the album is called ARTPOP and the chorus of Applause is basic as **** so you get art and pop on it

I don't like Gaga's idea of bringing 'art' to her lyrics because instead of making art she's too concerned with discussing it. If the melodies and lyrics spoke for themselves, and the visuals behind the entire project (music videos, album artwork, and performances) were visually captivating then everything would fall into place.

I absolutely agree with this statement.

ARTPOP as a theme was not executed well at all.

But I still love the album.

The Edge of Glory is heavenly, so is Gypsy. She doesn't need to write out-of-this-world lyrics that are understood only by her and some little monsters.

I agree. I love the album, but the era was a mess... and all the vibes Madonna has been giving lately, have given me the eerie feeling she is going to do exactly what Gaga wanted to do and/or should've done

Gaga's main problem with her music is that she tries so hard to input a deep meaning for the songs when it doesn't always work right. sometimes embracing a much simpler subject or tune or production is enough to get your point across, but Gaga is more concerned with artistry than simplicity and it's a very good reason why most people don't understand ARTPOP -- she's trying too hard to make something big.

Just Dance, Poker Face, Paparazzi, Bad Romance, Telephone, Edge of Glory, they all did great and were really good songs because they embraced simplicity while still accomplishing their themes and purposes. I honestly do feel like ARTPOP could be a great era while still embracing simplicity and without having to be big or deep.

I agree. Mary Jane Holland is the perfect example. The lyrics are way too wordy and try way too hard to be 'deep' by its words but they don't convey any strong imagery or create any strong emotion. Gaga should know that writing is more than putting pretentious words together and getting them to rhyme. She isn't even a bad writer most of the time. I am just stunned that they went with her weakest tracks possible in an attempt to pull orff 'artpop.'

She's in a tough position because people will criticise her for basic lyrics and they'll criticise her for eccentric lyrics. She's having to dumb herself down after trying hard to make her music tie better with her visuals. That must be frustrating.

Ideally a balance would be found, and I think her choruses do find the right balance. They're quirky but catchy pop. It's the verses where she tends to go off the rails melodically and lyrically. Probably in an attempt to de-pop the song and force depth.
