Yes, that's true. But as soon as they figured out that Dark Horse wasn't dying anytime soon and Unconditionally wasn't picking up, they released Dark Horse as an official single, when it was (most likely) not in the original era plan to be released, at least not so early, if at all. Birthday was supposed to be the third single, but it was pushed back to allow Dark Horse to properly smash, giving Katy another successful #1 hit.
Don't get me wrong, it was a brilliant decision and I'm so glad that they did it. Dark Horse is a fantastic song and I think it was a much better choice than Birthday for the third single. But it was a decision that was certainly made with success and the charts in mind, at least partially.

I can't WAIT for the video, I have a feeling that it's going to be one of her most hilarious. I don't see why Katy fans have a problem with having fun, comedic videos. I think they're refreshing, and put some entertainment back into the music industry that's much needed.
