I'm so torn.. I honestly don't know what to write about. However after listening to "The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia", "Goodbye Earl", "Two Black Cadillacs" and "Independence Day" I'm tempted to write a story and mend it into a song.


I have a personal one that's a "dark side" about me, but I'm afraid it relates too well to my first song I entered.

Let me write my dark side song from the point of view of a young man who loves indie music and is struggling with his secret obsession with MC, which torments him daily. In the bridge he needs to pause We Belong Together in order to find the hipster song of the week and doing so causes him so much anguish

Just finished writing a rough draft of a possible entry. Since I went dark and crazy last round I went sad and depressing this round.

Some info about the song (not that anyone cares):

• It follows AABACB format
• It includes fish, haircuts, pianos and pursed lips
• I cannot think of a song title for very life of me
• It's very different from the song I wrote for last round, I could probably churn something similar out and do pretty well again but I want to show a bit of diversity and experiment while it's still pretty safe to do so.

I just brainstormed in the shower and am pretty excited about the challenge now. The topic can get maudlin, so I just need to be careful and avoid cliches/overly sentimental lines.

Independence Day, I love it too.

Well it depends, my very first song I ever wrote by myself was about my self-harm / cutting problem. However, I made up a fictional story of a high school kid who cut himself and eventually committed suicide.

When I write songs that are more "life" orientated, I tend to write them more story-driven because I love creating a fictional character and living my life through him.

My love songs though are extremely personal and always told through my eyes.

I see. Well, looks like you won't be writing a love song for this challenge (although you def could!). I like a good story song as long as it doesn't read too much like a straight-up story. But I love when a songwriter can work the story and the lyricism together, like in "Independence Day" and "Two Black Cadillacs." But the women in the two black veils didn't bother to cryyy!

The song I started to write for this challenge was how the guy I liked earlier this year.. I was thinking about our sexual encounters only and nothing else and how I was probably thinking too much with my.. and not my brain. It was dark in the sense that I was letting sexual thoughts take control of me but then I figured now wasn't the time to write it.

As long as you heighten the 'dark side' of the sexual urges, I think it sounds fitting! You can take it to a Nine Inch Nails "Closer" place

I've actually been on a roll. I have the first verse and the chorus completely done, and the second verse is in the fine tuning stages. It helped because my bf texted me and said some things that made me really angry so now its about him. I showed him the chorus too and now he's angry at me and this might not end well. But I have a good song out of it at least.

I actually think that's really cool. Interested to see what the judges have to say about those topics (like how are haircuts and fish gonna fit in?)
Mine is a revenge-based song about striking fear into others to offset the fear in ourselves. Its dark but actually tamer than my song from round 1 . I'm happy with it.
