We're allowed to explain our songs now? And recycle songs we already wrote? I feel like some basic rules need to be clarified. Does it say anywhere we can't plagiarize?

I see that. Truly, I thought it went without saying, but no plagiarizing, no repeats, and you don't need to explain your song. Hint: I usually don't read the explanation until after I read the song, just to see if the explanation was really needed or not...

Oh, so we are actually allowed to send explanations? I know that's been outlawed in the past (as the song should speak for itself, like any song on the radio), so this is good to know. Thanks for the clarification!

Will I lose marks if I don't leave an explanation?

No, it's encouraged not to send one actually, because it makes it seem like your lyrics can't explain themselves/are not open to interpretation...both of which are not good traits for a song to have.

As if an artist has never clarified or explained the meaning behind their song before

At best, it's what the song meant to them. If an artist can't accept people giving their own meaning to a song, then that defeats the purpose of the word "art" in their profession title.

Regardless of all of that, his comment was made in response to what I commented on the previous page I presume, which if he knew what I meant, it had nothing to do with explaining the meaning behind the song at all

Sorry I have offended you, allow me to explain myself.
1) Songs can be interpreted differently. Text is text. It is hard to understand what the text is really emoting sometimes, because it is just text. Allowing me to explain my song can provide the readers a clearer view on what I am saying. Plus, if I put in the effort and time into explanations, I would think they'd count for something.
2) This song was written during the first challenge, but not for this game intentionally. I don't normally "recycle" songs - but considering the original is five days old and I made some crucial edits, I'll allow myself.
3) I don't plagiarize.
I hope you can understand where I'm coming from now

I thought you might think I was being shady, but I was really just checking about the rules because last season we were explicitly told NOT to explain our song at all or points would be deducted. I actually like hearing artists talk about what moment inspired their song or the bigger meaning behind it (which is of course different from explaining exactly what's happening in the song cause the lyrics are confusing).

Well, my personal opinion about art is that it's useless when there's a "right" interpretation. For me, art is meant to be interpreted, and that's the beauty of it; I could think One Sweet Day is about Barney the Purple Dinosaur riding a tricycle into the core of hell and I'm still not "wrong". So, kinda similar to what Huga was saying. Ironically, I did provide a description last round but it was only to show how the song fit the challenge's requirements.
If Nait allows it, however, I won't frown upon anyone using descriptions.

Noooo so much drama in this thread today I swear that wasn't aimed at you. I was asking about explanations and threw in the other two questions just as other rules we should all be clear on.
Now, I think the text being interpreted in diff ways is natural and would argue against explanations, but my recycle question wasn't directed at you.

OMG, it's all perfectly clear to me now!
And, yes, descriptions are not frowned upon. Especially if it's wholly personal; I really would love to know why it is to the writer...

"And I know you're [Barney the Purple Dinosaur]
Like so many friends we've [biked into the core of hell]
And I know eventually we'll [take off the training wheels]
One sweet day"

lmao, I've actually never even heard One Sweet Day. I'm sure my grandparents loved doing the Charleston to it back in their heyday though!
